Federal Government Internship for Newcomers

The Federal Internship for Newcomers (FIN) Program offers eligible newcomers a chance to gain valuable temporary work experience and training opportunities with Canadian federal, provincial and municipal organizations.

There are different opportunities every year. Employers offer internships in fields like:

  • administration
  • project support/management
  • policy and research
  • computer science

Through the FIN Program, candidates are hired as temporary employees and are able to:

  • understand job application and hiring processes
  • learn about Canadian workplace culture
  • network with professionals
  • attend training sessions
  • be matched with a public service mentor

Positions currently available through FIN program: Program Officer (PM-02) – Federal Internship for Newcomers Program

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – Various Departments, Agencies and Organizations. Internships are located in St-John’s, Halifax, Ottawa/Gatineau, the Greater Toronto Area and Victoria.

Please note that geographic limitations apply. You must reside or be employed in one of the areas of selection below.

Submit your application(s) only for job categories available in your location and for which you are qualified. Your application(s) will be screened out if submitted for a position outside your geographical location.

Graduates of the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Student Refugee Program can apply from anywhere in Canada but must not apply to more than one location. Willingness to relocate (at your own expense) will be verified before making referrals for a position.

Who can apply: St. John’s (NL):
Permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for 10 years or less and who are currently residing or are employed in St-John’s (NL) or within a 150 kilometer radius of St. John’s (NL), within Canadian territory extending to, amongst others, Burnside-Saint Chad’s (NL), Port Blandford (NL), Terrenceville (NL) or Petit Forte (NL).

Halifax (NS):
Permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for 10 years or less and who are currently residing or are employed in Halifax (NS) or within a 100 kilometer radius of Halifax (NS), and within Canadian territory.

Greater Toronto Area (ON):
Permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for 10 years or less and who are currently residing or are employed in Toronto (ON) or within a 125 kilometer radius of Toronto (ON), within Canadian territory, extending to amongst others, Port Colborne (ON), Woodstock (ON), Midland (ON) or Peterborough (ON).

Ottawa / Gatineau (ON / QC):
Permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for 10 years or less and who are currently residing or are employed in the National Capital Region or within a 125 kilometer radius of Ottawa (ON)/Gatineau (QC), within Canadian territory, extending to amongst others, Pembroke (ON) or Maniwaki (QC).

Victoria (BC):
Permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for 10 years or less and who are currently residing or are employed in Victoria (BC) or within a 75 kilometer radius of Victoria (BC), within Canadian territory, extending to, amongst others, Ladysmith (BC), Lake Cowichan (BC).

World University Service of Canada (WUSC):
Permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for 10 years or less, who are currently residing or are employed in Canada and who have graduated from WUSC Student Refugee Program.
