Young SIETAR presents a webinar: Importance of Cultural Awareness in Social Movements
How does a movement shape our view of another culture? How objective is it in protesting against perceived abuses and injustices occurring in a particular culture? How can the perpetuation of preconceived notions and stereotypes be avoided to create a space for cross-cultural dialog between various communities?
In this 60 minute webinar we will shed light on a feminist social movement, FEMEN, and its intention to defend women‚s rights worldwide and in the Arab-Muslim world in particular. We will highlight the controversy that this movement has created as a result of its beliefs about women‚s status in those communities. Finally, we will provide an insight into how Arab-Muslim women perceive themselves in their societies and their opinions of a movement such as FEMEN‚s actions.
