How does a movement shape our view of another culture? How objective is it in protesting against perceived abuses and injustices occurring in a particular culture? How can the perpetuation of preconceived notions and stereotypes be avoided to create a space for cross-cultural dialog between various communities?

In this 60 minute webinar we will shed light on a feminist social movement, FEMEN, and its intention to defend women‚s rights worldwide and in the Arab-Muslim world in particular. We will highlight the controversy that this movement has created as a result of its beliefs about women‚s status in those communities. Finally, we will provide an insight into how Arab-Muslim women perceive themselves in their societies and their opinions of a movement such as FEMEN‚s actions.

The Presenters:

Lea Gabay is an ESL teacher who has been teaching in various countries such
as Vietnam, Spain, the UK, and Germany. Amira Mlik was born and raised in Tunisia where she works as a freelance translator, EFL trainer and Expat advisor.
