2013 CDC Presentation: Successful Employer Engagement Strategies: Lessons learnt from Immigrant Employment Initiatives across Canada

On March 8, 2013 Olga Shcherbyna presented about her research and its practical applications to career practitioners at 2013 CDC.

Since 2003 over 10 Immigrant Employment Councils (IECs) have emerged in Canada, including Toronto Regional Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC). This collaboration is now recognized internationally as one of the most successful immigrant employment initiatives in engaging employer communities. In this interactive presentation you will learn about specific employer engagement strategies that made TRIEC a success story as well as how other IECs managed to engage employers as corporate partners. Participants will have an opportunity to brainstorm how these employer-focused strategies are applicable in BC’s context.

Presenter’s Bio:
For the last ten years Olga Shcherbyna has been working with immigrant and business organizations to develop new innovative ways to improve immigrant economic and social integration into Canadian society. Among other projects, Olga initiated and managed the development of the first in BC Cultural Competency Toolkit for HR professionals in 2009 and coordinated the first in Metro Vancouver Civic Engagement Initiative for Immigrants (2008). As a consultant, Olga worked with BC HRMA, City of Coquitlam, City of Richmond, Immigrant Employment Council of BC and other organizations. Olga holds M.Sc. in Planning from UBC where her research focused on identifying success factors for multi-stakeholder collaborations such as TRIEC.
